Thoughts in Action

Alba Corral’s imagery appears meticulously choreographed as it unfolds and dances across a giant screen. Through the medium of code, we are watching her mind at work, live on stage, and often in the company of musicians. They jam together, challenging themselves and their audiences as they leap into the creative possibilities offered by code, math, software, and technology.

Corral’s videos and printed stills highlight the vastness of the decision-making process that goes into the construction of art that is generated by code. Though she begins her performances with a general plan of action, they are spontaneous events, so when we view her pieces, we are seeing human creativity elegantly demonstrated.

Using algorithms found in nature as building blocks, she begins with a few simple lines that multiply into intricate forms that entwine to create still larger structures. The drawing process is so compelling; you may find yourself merging with her, trying to anticipate her next move. The colors bleed while patterns multiply, twisting and unfolding like living organisms. We recognize life in her machine-made forms.

Corral’s background in computer engineering, combined with her eye for art, has allowed her to craft a distinct style. Over the past several years, Corral has exhibited at festivals and events across Europe, Mexico, Japan & the USA. Her performances have won awards, and she is now using her good eye to curator Eufònic, a festival of performing arts celebrated in Terres de l'Ebre, Spain.
