Kent Williams:Amalgam Paintings and Drawings 1992-2007

Introduction Edward Lucie-Smith, essay Julia Morton

At first glance, Kent Williams’ cinematic paintings and soul-searing quandaries can be startling. As art writer Phillip Jullian states, “After admiring so many abstracts, it takes a considerable effort to admit that the subject of a picture is important.”

By casting aspects of his private life onto the public stage in the form of timeless moral dilemmas, Williams has reinstated the importance of subjects, and taken back the role of narrator.

“I like work that’s pushed and non-conservative,” Williams explains “but for the sake of emotive resonance, not in lieu of it.”
